indigenous Governance
Indigenous systems of governance existed long before colonial powers stepped foot on Turtle Island. CG Law recognizes self- government is an inherent right which needs to be respected and supported if reconciliation is to be achieved. CG Law is committed to helping clients understand and navigate legislation and policies affecting Indigenous rights, including the Indian Act, and to develop laws, policies and governance frameworks to promote sovereignty and self-determination and build long term capacity and accountability within communities.
To facilitate the re-assertion of Indigenous governance systems, we work with First Nations to develop constitutional and legislative frameworks, membership and election laws as well as the development of other laws and/or policies which align with the community's vision and advance its goals concerning economic development and the well being of members. We can also work with your community to develop strategies for transition.
